Obituary for Jeffrey Leighton Wilds

Jeffrey Leighton Wilds
Jeffrey Leighton Wilds, 47, of Irwin died Thursday January 19, 2017 at his home. Mr. Wilds was born on March 7, 1969, in McKeesport Hospital, the son of Norman J. (Jim) and Joelle (Lehner) Wilds. A lifelong resident of the area, Jeff graduated with high honors from Norwin High School in 1987, where he later served as President of Norwin Band Aides, and from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. He was employed as a manager at Giant Eagle in Penn Township, after holding similar positions with the Dollar General Corporation and the Scozio Family Supermarkets. An Avid Pittsburgh sports fan, Jeff’s passion for baseball stayed with him for his entire life. His playing career included notable success in P.A.L. and N.C.A.A. youth baseball leagues, Norwin High School, Norwin American Legion, Daily News League, Westmoreland County League and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg where he also served a manager. Jeff will always be remembered as a fierce competitor and a loyal teammate who gave everything he had on the mound and at the plate. In addition to winning a WPIAL section 1 title with Norwin High School in his senior year, one of Jeff’s greatest memories was pitching in an All-Star game at Three Rivers Stadium. In recent years, he brought that same passion to his duties as an assistant coach and mentor for Penn State Greater Allegheny men’s baseball team. Jeff was predeceased by his grandparents, Charles N. and Elizabeth (Gall) Wilds; his maternal grandparents, William J. and Irene (Randolph) Lehner; and his father-in-law John A. (Jack) Clayton. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Teri (Clayton) Wilds; his daughter, Samantha, and her fiancé, Robert Lauricia, of Penn Township; his faithful companions, Perdita and Malkin; and his brother, Brian J. Wilds, of North Huntingdon. To the Penn State Greater Allegheny baseball team, the Wilds Family fully understands and appreciates how much you meant to Jeff. He cared about each and every one of his players. Remember his spirit and his lesson as you battle through the upcoming season. Friends will be 1to 5 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the ott Funeral Home Inc. 805 Pennsylvania Avenue Irwin. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Brenda Barnes, Pastor of the New Hope Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Jeannette Memorial Park, Jeannette. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the White Oak Animal Safe Haven, 2995 Lincoln Way White Oak, PA 15131.
